Solomon Cohen papers, 1841-1867

This collection consists of manuscripts and correspondence. Included are a lecture delivered to the Georgia Historical Society, 1841; meeting minutes of the Georgia Historical Society, 1855; and a eulogy of the Rt. Reverend Stephen Elliott, published by the Georgia Historical Society, 1867. Also included are four letters to Cohen, as Confederate States Postmaster in Savannah, from officials in the Confederate States Post Office Department in Richmond, Va., 1863.

Solomon Cohen (1802-1875), son of Rev. Moses C. Cohen, was a lawyer in Georgetown, S.C. until 1838 when he moved to Savannah. He represented the Georgetown District in the South Carolina Legislature. After moving to Savannah, he represented Chatham County in the Georgia Legislature. He was on the Board of Alderman of Savannah and served as U.S. Postmaster in Savannah, 1853-1861.
